May, Volume 1

Floral Dreams

Letter from the Editor

Hello everyone! Welcome back to another exciting issue of GMA, right in time for Golden Week. I know that many of you are off adventuring in Japan or internationally this week, but a good number of you are also sticking around Aomori. Either way, make sure you take advantage of the time you have off and do something you love. Whether you check out a new place or just see old friends, enjoy it! It’s a beautiful time of year: a time for metaphorical new beginnings and fresh starts. Soak it all in!

I’d like to mention a quick thanks to Aomori AJET for organizing Saturday’s Hanami event, as well as all the JETs and friends who came out to celebrate! I believe fun was had by all and it’s always nice to get the family together.

There’s still some time left for cherry blossom viewing, but if you haven’t already make sure you head out to see those sakura within the next few days, even if only for a few minutes in your own backyard. It’s sure to bring a smile to your face and remind you why you came to Japan (among other reasons, surely).

Let’s take a look at this month’s first volume:

Events – A list of Aomori’s events happening in May, with top picks in bold.

NomNom Tabemono – A restaurant review for Gonohe’s Karara-tei, by Mina

Photo Corner – Kyle brings us the beautiful snowy sights of Mt. Hakkoda.

Trivia Trap – This month’s theme is Strange Games… can you find the answers?

Shufu Tips – Part 2 in a segment on spring cleaning, this time covering clutter and how to deal with it.

Hot Springs Eternal – David reviews the diverse onsen (and varying water qualities) of Naruko, Miyagi.

Off-Route – This month covers the town of Nikko in Tochigi prefecture, a World Heritage Site with plenty to offer!

Forward All Inquiries – Jackson helps a reader deal with those all-too-common work relationship troubles.

This will be Kyle’s last month writing (photographing) for Photo Corner, so we’d like to thank him¬†for all his hard work on the column! It’s been a pleasure to read, and we hope you enjoyed his articles too. If you are interested in taking over Photo Corner, or just have a few nice shots lying around you’d like to share, please get in touch with us at !

Hope you enjoy this month’s articles, and don’t let those May showers get you down!

    • GMA is a bi-monthly publication run by and for JET Program participants in Aomori Prefecture, Japan. But we hope that anyone can enjoy it!
