Snowsnowsnownonono… The snow has hit early this year and I am sure you are scrambling to make sure your winter tires are on or that you have a jacket thick enough to ward off the snowy winds! One of my favourite things to do during early winter is going to various places in the prefecture, get a mulled wine, and enjoy the lights in the snow.
Japan is incredibly fond of lights during winter. Twinkly lights that make you wonder about how much the power bill would be. Illuminations galore! Towada City in particular looks pretty with their illuminations (I am biased because I am fond of the ghost art statue), but many other places in Aomori prefecture also have their own light show festivities.
I’ll only mention a few, but there are plenty in the prefecture you might want to check out!
There are definitely more illumination events than these!! For the best up-to-date information, taking a look at Mel’s amazing blog!
Keep in tune for more information about the upcoming winter snow festivals! I know I will be going to quite a few….

Depending on where you go, a road trip in a car might be the best way! Local trains and buses also run periodically for these winter events.
If you can hang on until February, you will be able to visit some of Aomori’s best snow festivals! Snow lanterns, igloos, beer and mulled wine… perfect.
Snow tires! If you haven’t got them on yet, start to consider it. Once it snows, it will probably puke down. Also good to pack a snow brush for clearing snow off your car, and getting that antifreeze some action!
