Nya-ow can I help you?

By Rachael Dory

Welcome to the third installment of Voracious Vernacular! Today’s phrase is a Japanese idiom and was brought to my attention by the fantastic [Editor’s note: not so fantastic] Kitty Yeung:

猫の手も借りたい![Neko no te mo karitai!]

When translated literally, this idiom means “I want to borrow a cat’s paw!” People use this phrase when they’re incredibly busy, implying that you need all the helping hands you can get – even if it’s from, of all things, a cat.
